DIII No. 8 Stevens Sweeps Conference Rivals in Tri-Match

Riverdale, N.Y. - The eighth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Bard College Saturday afternoon in a tri-match held in Riverdale, N.Y. With the wins, the Ducks improve to 4-1 in North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division play and 9-8 overall on the year. All 16 of Stevens' players saw action in both matches during today's competition.

In the first match against Mount Saint Vincent (30-17, 30-23, 30-20), sophomore outside hitters Jonathan Landis and Andrew Fessler each had solid performances for the Ducks. Landis had a team-high nine kills, while Fessler notched eight kills and a pair of blocks. Junior outside hitter Joe Trinsey added six kills and three blocks.

Freshmen setters Aaron Ostrovsky and Brandt Grobeis combined for 40 assists. Ostrovsky led with 24 as Grobeis landed 16 assists during the victory over the Dolphins. Junior middle hitter Andrew Cranford finished with three service aces in just a game played.

Mount Saint Vincent (6-11) was led by freshmen outside hitters John Furka (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Ryan Vogel (Holbrook, N.Y.), who each posted seven kills apiece. Defensively for the Dolphins, freshman libero David Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) led with eight kills and four block assists. Junior setter Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, N.Y.) dished for 22 assists and added one service ace in the defeat.

In the afternoon match against Bard (30-12, 30-17, 30-18), the Ducks out blocked the Raptors 14-1. Stevens produced a 0.553 hitting percentage, as it held Bard to a -0.060 attacking percentage. Junior outside hitter John Dennan led with 10 kills and a pair of aces. Trinsey had a solid showing having accumulated nine kills, five service aces and four block assists.

Landis and Fessler each posted five kills apiece, while Cranford added five block assists. Ostrovsky and Grobeis totaled 43 assists. Grobeis tallied 17 as Ostrovsky landed 26 assists and recorded four digs in the victory.

The Raptors (8-8) were led by senior outside hitter Zachary Hamaker (Walnut Creek, Calif.), who registered 11 kills and five digs. Junior outside hitter Henry Schenker (Verona, N.J.) notched seven kills and a pair of digs, while sophomore setter Steven Alday (Phoenix, Ariz.) dished for 20 assists.

The Ducks are scheduled to take on No. 5 New York University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in New York, N.Y. Stevens shutdown the Violets in a 3-1 decision during the Ducks season-opener on January 16. Bochicchio led with 16 kills, five service aces and 12 digs in the four-game victory.
