Agenda
I. AVCA Report and Convention Update

Jason Jones gave a report on the AVCA Convention. The convention early registration discount ended on November 3 and as of November 6 the AVCA had received 1,013 registrations. This is an increase of about 150 registrations at the same date last year. Staff expects to receive 100 - 150 additional registrations before the beginning of the convention. In addition, the AVCA has sold 1,264 match tickets as of November 6.

A minority coaches workshop will be held at the convention on December 12. The morning will consist of sessions on ball control, man-up defense and blocking while in the afternoon participants will attend Terry Pettit's pre-convention seminar. Registration for the workshop is $125 and covers the workshop, a full convention registration and a one-year membership to the AVCA for new members. The committee was asked to promote the workshop to anyone they know who might be interested. Information can be found on the AVCA Web site.

The deadline for the AVCA Member Needs Survey is November 10. Results from the survey will be used to guide the AVCA board and staff in developing programs and services for the association so it is very important for all members to participate. The committee was asked to submit their survey by the deadline and remind other coaches to do the same.

The committee was reminded that Coaching Volleyball magazine will have a new look starting with the November/December 2006 issue. Members should receive the new publication any day and are encouraged to submit their feedback to Rick Capone, AVCA's Editor, at rick.capone@avca.org.

II. Membership Drive

Many conferences are having meetings and conference calls over the next several days so the committee members were asked to take that opportunity and invite their fellow conference coaches to join the AVCA

III. Legislative Discussion

The committee discussed the issue of using male practice players for volleyball. This issue has not been a concern for coaches in soccer or softball and has primarily been an issue facing women's basketball. The concern is that allowing teams to use male practice players will take opportunities away from women athletes. Jeanne asked the committee for feedback to share with Kathy DeBoer so she could address the issue when she attends the NCAA Convention. The committee indicated using male practice players was not an issue for them and no action was needed at this time.

IV. DIII Poll Feedback

Mark Massey and Samantha Lambert developed a document on poll issues and distributed it via e-mail to the committee. Mark led a discussion that included poll dynamics, getting ranked, poll voter responsibility and poll philosophy. He suggested several steps to assist the poll voting process including:

§ Educating poll voters during the preseason with examples of varying potential situations and philosophies

§ Implementing a conference call to discuss proper voting procedures and how to utilize the preseason preview information

§ Provide easy Internet links to sites such as the NCAA regional rankings and DIII conference Web sites to assist with compiling information throughout the season

§ Provide clickable e-mail links to all poll voters (for other voters to use) to enhance communication between them about teams in their respective regions

The AVCA can assist with many of these suggestions and will work to implement some of these ideas next season.

V. DIII Championship Information

The AVCA has been working with the Salem Civic Center to develop a Coaches/Parents Clinic prior to the DIII Championship match in Salem, Virginia. The clinic will be held from 4 - 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 18 and is free to all high school parents and coaches with the purchase of a ticket to the NCAA DIII Women's Volleyball Championship. Chad Schreiber will lead a panel presentation on off-season conditioning and Steve Dallman will conduct a session on the basics of recruiting. The AVCA will also conduct a drawing for a free one-year membership that will be given to a high school coach who attends the clinic. The goal of the clinic is to add an extra incentive for area high school coaches and parents to attend the championship match. All coaches are asked to promote this clinic to anyone they know who might be interested. More information is available at the Salem Civic Center or by contacting the AVCA.

According to Brad Bankston, Commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference who will be hosting the championships, both the semifinals and championship match will be broadcast live via a Web cast. A link to the Web cast will be available both on the www.ncaasports.com site as well as the ODAC site which is www.odaconline.com.

VI. Other/New Business

Coaches are encouraged to put any open dates when developing schedules on the AVCA Web site. This is an excellent resource for coaches to help with scheduling.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 a.m. ET. The next meeting is scheduled at the AVCA Convention on Wednesday, December 13 at 2:30 p.m. CT. The DIII General Meeting will be held at the AVCA Convention on Friday, December 15 at 9 a.m. CT.
