No. 3 Long Beach State Wins at No. 10 Ohio State
Columbus, Ohio - Paul Lotman recorded a career-high 32 kills and Dan Alexander added a career-best 18 kills as the third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team won at Ohio State 30-27, 30-22, 28-30, 30-27 on Friday evening at St. John Arena.
The 49ers improve to 11-1 overall, while tenth-ranked OSU fell to 8-4.
Lotman hit an impressive .373, adding eight digs and four blocks, while Alexander hit a career-best .818 (18-0-22) with five block assists. Alexander came into this weekend leading the MPSF in blocking and hitting percentage.
The 49ers, who also got 15 kills and four service aces from Dean Bittner, hit .312 (71-26-144) in the match. Setter Mike Klipsch finished with 66 assists, four blocks and six digs. The 49ers recorded 40 digs in the match.
Lotman, whose previous high in kills was 29 set last season against Cal State Northridge, moved to No. 15 on the 49er career kill chart with 1,063 kills. He has hit double digits in kills in all 12 matches this season for Long Beach State.
Ohio State was led by Robbie Klein's 20 kills and 11 kills each for Ben Spurlock and Brett Versen. The Buckeyes hit just .216 (52-25-125) in the match.
The 49ers rallied from a 22-20 deficit in game four to pull out the victory. Long Beach went on a 5-2 run to grab the lead for good at 25-24. After a Buckeye timeout, a Bittner kill and a Brett Versen hitting error gave the 49ers a 27-24 advantage. OSU got no closer than two points the remainder of the game.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 7 pm (Eastern) in St. John Arena.
