No. 2 Penn State Sweeps East Stroudsburg, 3-0
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The second-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team improved to 15-0 with a three-game sweep (30-21, 30-19, 30-20) of East Stroudsburg Wednesday night in EIVA action.
All 14 Nittany Lion players saw action in the match, which was also the squad's sixth league victory. Junior outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) led all players with 13 kills on .579 hitting in less than two games of action. Sophomore middle hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) contributed eight kills on an errorless 11 swings to hit .727 while junior middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Alan Mars (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied seven and six kills, respectively. Junior opposite Ryan Sweitzer (Lancaster, Pa.) and junior middle hitter Jon Sherrick (Mountville, Pa.) contributed four and three kills, while freshman outside hitter Brad McCoy (Irvine, Calif.) notched two kills on an errorless four swings. As a team, Penn State attacked at a .400 clip while holding East Stroudsburg to hitting .097.
Senior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) dished out 23 assists in a game and a half while senior setter Travis Foltz (Westlake Village, Calif.) closed out the match with 20 assists of his own.
Penn State racked up 10 service aces in the match, led by Holt with five, one shy of his school-record and career-high six. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Jason Ambrose (Barrington, Ill.) added in two winners while Mars and Anderson both also provided an ace.
Lipsitz and freshman libero Dennis Del Valle (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) each notched four digs in the win while Sweitzer and Ambrose notched three and Anderson and Foltz posted two.
The Nittany Lions claimed the blocking battle, 8.5 to 4.0. Lipsitz topped the list with four stuffs and Mars and Sherrick both produced three blocks while Ambrose added in two.
Penn State returns home to host EIVA foe Saint Francis on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall. The Red Flash currently sit second in league action, one match behind the Nittany Lions.
