No. 7 Ohio State Drops 3-2 Decision at No. 14 George Mason

Fairfax, Va. - The seventh-ranked Ohio State (7-2 overall, 5-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team rallied to take No. 14 George Mason (6-3) to a fifth game before falling, 15-13 in that game. The 30-27, 25-30, 33-31, 27-30, 15-13 Patriot victory stopped a five-match Ohio State winning streak.

George Mason's Kyle Gramit scored a match-high 26 points with 20 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and six assist blocks. OSU's Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) and Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) shared team-high honors with 24.5 points each. Versen had a match-high 23 kills, adding three assist blocks while Klein collected 20 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and three assist blocks.

George Mason broke a 3-3 tie in game one with an OSU error, a Gramit ace serve, a Hudson Bates kill and a Ryan Kwiatkowski-R.J. Goubeaux-Luke Maloney block to open a 7-3 lead. The Buckeyes would close within one, five times, the last at 28-27. A Bates kill set game point at 29-27 for the Patriots. An OSU error ended the game at 30-27. George Mason hit .226 to .200 for the Buckeyes in the game.

The Patriots broke a 2-2 tie in game two with kills from Gramit and Bates for a 4-2 lead. Trailing, 12-9, a kill from Kevin Heine (So.-Fr., St. Louis, Mo.), a Heine-Versen block, at Patriot error and a second Heine-Versen block put Ohio State ahead, 13-12. At 14-13, a George Mason error made it 15-13. The Patriots regained the lead at 16-15 with a Goubeaux-Bates block, an OSU error and a second Goubeaux-Bates block. A Klein kill tied the game at 16. A Goubeaux kill made it 17-16 GMU. A Versen kill, a Patriot error, a Tobkin kill, a Tobkin-Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio) block and another Tobkin kill gave the Buckeyes a 21-17 lead. A Versen-Tobkin-Heine block set game point at 29-24. A Buckeye error made it 29-25. Spurlock, with a kill ended the game at 30-25 to tie the match at one game each. The Buckeyes hit .333 for the game to .132 for George Mason.

In a tight game three that saw 15 ties and seven lead changes, George Mason held a 28-26 lead before a Spurlock kill and a Patriot error tied the game at 28. A Tobkin ace serve made it 29-28 Buckeyes with Ohio State serving game point. A Bates kill tied the game at 29. A Versen kill gave Ohio State a 30-29 lead, serving its second game point. George Mason tied the game at 30 with a Gramit kill. A Heine kill gave Ohio State a third game point at 31-30. Gramit again tied the game at 31. George Mason took a 32-31 lead with a Goubeaux kill and was serving game point. The game ended on an OSU error to give the Patriots a 33-31 lead and a 2-1 lead in the match. George Mason hit .464 for the game to .125 for the Buckeyes.

George Mason opened game four with a 6-1 run. Two Gramit kills, a Bates ace serve, a Goubeaux-Gramit block and two OSU errors offset a Klein kill. Trailing, 15-13, a Patriot error and a Versen kill tied the game at 15. A George Mason error gave OSU a 16-15 lead. The Patriots tied the game at 16 with a Goubeaux kill. Tied at 18, a Spurlock kill, two Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.)-Spurlock blocks and a Patriot error opened a 22-18 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes opened the lead to five at 25-20. Trailing, 27-23, the Patriots scored three straight points with a kill from Gramit, an OSU error and a Kwiatkowski solo block to trail, 27-26. A Versen kill and a Patriot error set game point at 29-26 for Ohio State. A Buckeye error made it 29-27. A block from Mathews and Spurlock closed out the game for Ohio State at 30-27 to tie the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .286 for the game to .200 for the Patriots.

Ohio State opened game five with a Klein kill. Bates tied the game at one with a kill. Kills from Klein and Tobkin gave Ohio State a 3-1 lead. A Patriot kill from Erik Lanham and one from Versen made it 4-2. Goubeaux and Heine kills made it 5-3. Errors by both teams made it 6-4. A Goubeaux kill and an OSU error tied the game at six. A Gramit kill gave George Mason a 7-6 lead. Versen, with a kill, tied the game at seven. Gramit and Tobkin kills made it 8-8. Kills from Bates and Spurlock move the score to 9-9. A Gramit kill and a Gramit-Goubeaux block put the Patriots ahead, 11-9. OSU closed to 11-10 with a Tobkin kill. A Gramit kill made it 12-10 Patriots. Errors by both teams made it 13-11. The Buckeyes cut the lead to one at 13-12 with a Tobkin kill. An OSU error made it 14-12 with George Mason serving for the match. A Versen kill stopped the match point at 14-13. George Mason closed out the game at 15-13 with a Bates kill to win the match, 3-2. The Patriots hit .500 for the game while Ohio State hit .529.

George Mason hit .276 for the match while Ohio State hit .264. The Buckeyes had a 79-66 advantage in kills while each squad recorded five ace serves. OSU gave up 20 service errors to 17 for the Patriots. The Buckeyes had a 45 to 39 margin in digs with Patriot Mark Burik recording a match-high 15 and OSU Conor Martin (Sr., Avon Lake, Ohio) collecting a team-high 13. At the net, George Mason had an 18.5 to 15 margin in team blocks. Goubeaux recorded a match-high 10 total blocks with a solo and nine assists. At setter, OSU Mathews had a match-high 68 assists and GMU's Kwiatkowski had 57.

Ohio Sate returns to conference play when they travel to face Ball State (7-6, 2-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday before hosting Juniata (4-3) in a non-conference match at 3 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena.
