Newbury Makes Quick News of Mount Ida
Brookline, Mass. - Freshman setter Matthew Talamantes (Sylmar, CA/Veiwpoint) tallied 43 assists to lead NewBury to a 3-0 sweep of the Mustangs of Mount Ida College. Talamantes, who was honored this week as NECVA New England Rookie of the Week, is currently ranked 4th in the league in assists, averaging 12.24 a game.
The win for Newbury marks the 6th for the Nighthawks this season, who are on a 4 game win streak.
From the opening serve of the game, the Nighthawks overpowered Mount Ida, winning 30-17, 30-20 and finishing off the final game of the match at 30-12. Newbury's offensive attack was unstoppable, with the power of Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) who played exceptionally well, hitting a .667 and accruing 12 kills. Aberly also played a strong defensive match as he protected the net for the Nighthawks, accumulating 5 assisted blocks, and also had a match-high 8 digs.
The Mustangs saw their only lead of the match in the second game when they came out to an early 1-6 run. However, their efforts fell short as Newbury's James Beck (Havre de Grace, MD/ Havre de Grace) attacked the Mustangs hard with 3 consecutive kills, turning the momentum back to the Nighthawks, who never looked back. Beck slammed a total of 9 kills for the night.
Mount Ida saw a vali a nt effort from senior middle hitter Tim Hughes (Holliston, MA/Holliston) who had a 10 kill effort in the loss.
After tonight's victory, Newbury is now 6-1 this season, while Mt. Ida drops to 1-6. Newbury is currently ranked 9th overall in the NECVA, and is tied for first in the New England Division. The Nighthawks play again this Saturday in a tri-match with Wentworth and Emmanuel on their home court at Pappas Gymnasium. First serve will be at 11:00 a.m.
