No. 8 Ohio State Defeats Quincy, 3-0

Columbus, Ohio - The eighth-ranked Ohio State (3-1 overall, 2-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team defeated Quincy (4-4, 0-3), 3-0 (30-23, 30-14, 30-19) Friday night, in Pepsi Arena, in front of 256 fans. O

SU's Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) scored a match-high 16.5 points against the Hawks with 11 kills, four ace serves and three assist blocks. For Quincy, Shawn Brannick had a team-high 10 points with seven kills, one ace serve and four assist blocks.

Tied at three in game one, a Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill and a Kevin Heine (So.-Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) ace serve gave the Buckeyes a 5-3 lead. Quincy closed to within one at 9-8 before a Hawk error, a Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio) kill and a block by Heine and Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) gave Ohio State at 12-8 lead. At 27-21, OSU, a John Klanac (So.-Fr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) kill and a Klein ace serve set game point for the Buckeyes at 29-21. Two Ohio State errors cut the margin to 29-23. A Versen kill ended the game at 29-23 Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .250 for the game to .182 for Quincy.

Ohio State opened game two by scoring the first five points of the game. The run began with a Klanac kill. After three Hawk errors, a Heine kill made it 5-0. At 8-3, three straight ace serves from Versen made it 11-3. Ohio State expanded the lead to 11 at 24-13. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a 6-1 run. A Hawk error, a Heine kill and an ace serve from Mathews made it 27-13. After a Hawk time out, a Heine kill and a Quincy error set game point at 29-13. A Buckeye error made it 29-14. A Versen kill ended the game at 30-14 for Ohio State to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .611 for the game to .043 for Quincy.

A Ted Schoenfeldt (So., Northbrook, Ill.) kill and two Quincy errors gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead in game three. A Quincy kill from Christopher Zeidler and two Buckeye errors tied the game at three. Ohio State scored the next five points starting with a Klein kill to take a 4-3 lead. A Hawk error, kills from Versen and Klein and another Quincy error gave Ohio State an 8-3 lead. Ohio State held a 20-17 lead before an eight-point run by the Buckeyes made it 28-17. The run began with a Hawk error, two Versen kills and another Hawk error as Quincy called time out at 24-17. The run continued with a Versen-Schoenfeldt block, a Versen-Schoenfeldt-Jason Tobkin (So.-Fr., Fairfield, Ohio) block, and two Quincy errors to make the lead, 28-17. A Quincy kill from Brannick stopped the run at 28-18. A Hawk error set match point at 29-18. A Buckeye error made it 29-19. Ohio State won the game, 30-19, off a Quincy service error to win the match, 3-0. For the game, Ohio State hit .167 to -.098 for Quincy.

For the match, Ohio State hit .300 to .012 for Quincy. The Buckeyes had a 38-22 advantage in kills and a 10-2 edge in ace serves. The Hawks gave up 19 service errors to 18 for Ohio State. Defensively, Ohio State had a 36-20 advantage in digs with OSU's Conor Martin (Sr., Avon Lake, Ohio) recording a match-high 14 digs. At the net, The Buckeyes had a 10 to 9.5 margin in team blocks. OSU's Heine recorded a match-high six assist blocks. At setter, Mathews posted a match-high 27 assists while Ivan Shirokov had 21 for Quincy.

Ohio State and Quincy complete the two-match series Saturday at 7 p.m. in Pepsi Arena
