II. AVCA MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Continue contacting coaches in your region to join or renew membership. NAIA membership is up to 61%. Out of 227 head coaches, 140 are AVCA members. Contact AVCA staff with any coaching changes in your region, so that new coaches may be contacted for membership.
III. COACHING EDUCATION
What are some ways that NAIA coaches get their coaching education? Responses on the call were clinics, books, technical journals, other coaches and National Convention, among others. Some suggestions for more education were local training and publicity for coaches clinics. Mike Gibson suggested that the AVCA and USA Volleyball could come up with something together, something that is more affordable than what is currently being offered.
IV. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Legislative Rep: Israel Negron
Israel Negron from the NAIA provided more information in last month's minutes, now posted on the AVCA Web site, for coaches to share with other coaches around the NAIA. Any questions regarding anything discussed, contact Israel.
V. DIRECT QUALIFICATION UPDATE
Competition Committee: Mike Gibson
Mike Gibson gave the committee an update of the progress of Direct Qualification. There was some discussion among the committee regarding at-large bids, strength of schedule and regional rankings/raters, and how these things will effect the new model. Contact Mike Gibson with any questions regarding the new Direct Qualification model.
VI. NEW NAIA OFFICE STAFF
The new NAIA Volleyball Championship Event Administrator is now Ruth Feldblum. Ruth can be reached at the NAIA office at 913-791-0044 ext. 129 or by e-mail at email@example.com. Ruth is taking over for Lori Thomas who has become Director of Championships and Human Resources at the national office. The NAIA has also added Steve Wilson as Manager of Sports Information and Media Services. His contact information is ext. 122 or e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
VII. MEN'S UPDATE
Men's Rep: Josh Crosier
California Baptist won the NAIA National Invitational Tournament for the fourth year in a row. Josh noted that it seems to be the same teams at the top every year, but those teams are competing with some of the top NCAA teams. He also noted that it appears NAIA men will be gaining one program, losing one or two, which is typical for this division.
VIII. ASSISTANT COACHES UPDATE
Brenda asked Kevin Hudson (Assistant Coaches Rep) to be thinking about whether the NAIA needs to get involved with the AVCA Assistant Coaches Committee. Currently, the Assistant Coaches Committee consists of primarily NCAA Division I representatives, but they are willing and wanting to include other groups. Kevin told the committee he is attempting to get in touch with the AVCA Board of Directors Assistant Coaches rep. Brenda said that she will see the assistant coaches rep at the Board meeting this weekend, and will talk to her for him.
IX. NEW BUSINESS
Check out the AVCA Web site for the report on the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship held on April 22. It was a huge success!!
Mike Gibson noted that the committee and leadership in volleyball in general need to continue to 1) keep pushing on a stat video education, and 2) how to train little kids better.
Brenda reminded the committee that the next call will not be until August. The committee will keep in touch via e-mail until that time.
Next NAIA HCC conference call scheduled for Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. ET.
Call adjourned at 12:04 p.m. (ET)
