DIII No. 5 Stevens Sweeps DI Sacred Heart

Hoboken, N.J. - Junior outside hitter Joe Trinsey led the fifth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win against Division I foe Sacred Heart University on Saturday in Hoboken, N.J. Trinsey produced a .421 hitting percentage on 10 kills and posted three service aces as the Ducks took down the Pioneers by the scores of 30-20, 30-10 and 30-22.

Stevens grabbed a one-game advantage from a powerful offensive attack led by junior outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio, who registered a .636 hitting percentage with eight kills on 11 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Jonathan Landis recorded four kills on five attempts, while freshman setter Brandt Grobeis dished out 15 assists in Game 1. With the game knotted at 9-all, the Ducks went on an 8-3 run by kills from Bochicchio and block assists from Landis and junior middle hitter Andrew Cranford. Trinsey put the game out of reach with two consecutive service aces as the deficit grew to nine points. Cranford sealed it with a kill as Stevens led one game to none.

In Game 2, the Ducks out-blocked the Pioneers 10-to-2. With a 9-3 score in favor of Stevens, the Pioneers Head Coach C.J. Emanuelson called a timeout. The Ducks came out firing as they went on an 11-5 run with kills from Trinsey and Landis as well as three consecutive block assists from Cranford. As the score read 23-9, six attack errors from Sacred Heart allowed Stevens to grab a two-game advantage. Once again Landis accumulated a .800 hitting percentage with four kills on five attempts. Junior middle hitter BJ Smith (Shelton, Conn.) also finished with four kills in the defeat.

Down 14-15 in Game 3, Stevens regained its momentum by tough serving from Cranford. A pair of kills from Bochicchio and two attack errors by the Pioneers allowed the Ducks to take back the lead as the score read 18-15. After a Sacred Heart timeout, Stevens went on a 12-7 run by solid passing from junior libero Michael Ozols and nine assists from freshman setter Aaron Ostrovsky. Landis controlled the last five points scored by Stevens with flawless serving as Trinsey closed out the match having recorded his fifth kill of the game.

Sacred Heart was led by Smith who registered nine kills on 23 attempts and three digs. Freshman setter Tim Sadowski (Salem, N.H.) totaled 22 assists, while freshman outside hitter Jon Mercado (Corona, N.Y.) finished with a .333 hitting percentage with five kills on 12 attempts.

Overall, Stevens out-blocked the Pioneers 14-to-2. Bochicchio had 12 kills with a .429 hitting percentage and five digs, while Grobeis totaled 23 assists. Landis finished with a .643 hitting percentage on 14 attempts and nine kills as Cranford led the team in total blocks with seven.

Stevens will travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to take on the No. 2 Eagles of Juniata College at 6 p.m. on January 23. The Ducks dropped two matches to the Eagles last season by a 1-3 and 0-3 result.
