Vance's Career-High 26 Kills Leads No. 8 Matadors Past No. 14 Gauchos

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Junior Eric Vance pounded a career-high 26 kills as eighth-ranked Cal State Northridge dropped the first game but came back to win the final three (31-33, 30-28, 30-24, 30-24) over #14 UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Robertson Gym.

With the win, the Matadors improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF. The loss drops the Gauchos to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Vance easily had his best match of the 2008 season as he posted his career-high 26 kills while committing just five errors in 52 swings for a .404 hitting clip. The junior also added four blocks, 12 digs and three aces to round out a solid all-around match. Vance's double-double is the third of his career and first by a Matador this season. Freshman Cody Loe (11 kills, .400) and sophomore Mike Gaudino (10 kills, .120) also posted double figure kill totals while senior Travis Bluemling matched his season-high with 52 assists. Loe also tallied four blocks including two solo stuffs.

As a team, the Matadors hit .278 (60-23-133) to .163 (54-33-129) for the Gauchos.

For UC Santa Barbara, freshman Jeff Menzel knocked down a team-high 24 kills (.204) and Theo Brunner added 12 kills (.320). Sam Moisenco added a match-high eight blocks, including two solo.

Tonight's match wraps up a six-match road trip to start the season for Cal State Northridge which opens the home schedule on Thursday, Jan. 24 against Stanford at 7 p.m.
