No. 4 UCLA Seeps Pacific for Second League Victory
Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's volleyball team defeated Pacific on Saturday to open the conference season with two straight victories for the first time since 2005.
The Bruins won 30-25, 30-21, 30-27 in 83 minutes before 520 fans in Pauley Pavilion. The victory raised UCLA's overall record to 4-1, 2-0. Pacific fell to 0-4, 0-2. The Bruins have now won 25 of 26 matches in the all-time series.
Junior setter Matt Wade (Mira Costa HS) continued to set effectively for the Bruins, distributing 28 assists and scoring six points on three kills (.333), and ace and four block assists. Sophomore Garrett Muagututia led the Bruins with 19 kills (.571), an ace, three block assists and 21.5 points. Junior Sean O'Malley, in a starting role at outside hitter, recorded a double-double: 12 kills (.455) and 10 digs.
In team statistics, the Bruins dominated, outgunning the Tigers 53-36 in kills and out-blocking them 11.5-6.0. UCLA also hit .376 and limited UOP to a percentage of .186.
Pekka Seppanen led the Tigers with 10 kills, two aces, two total blocks and 13.5 points.
UCLA hosts UC San Diego on Thur., Jan. 17 and unbeaten Long Beach State on Fri., Jan. 18. Both conference matches begin at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
