No. 22 Wichita State Sweeps UMKC
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Emily Stockman's 13 kills led the Shockers to a sweep of UMKC. WSU (4-0) won by scores of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-9.
In the first set, the Shockers raced out to a 14-7 lead and never looked back in a 25-11 win.
The Kangaroos took the early advantage in the second set grabbing an early 6-1 lead before the Shockers came back to take a 12-11 lead after a block. The teams went back and forth until WSU took a 25-20 victory.
A service ace by Lindsey Eckenrode gave the Shockers a 10-5 lead in the third set and WSU increased it to 17-7 on an ace by Melissa Granville. WSU won the set 25-9 on a kill by Amanda Backes.
Along with her 13 kills, Stockman hit .591, while Mary Elizabeth Hooper led the Shocks with 31 assists and also added nine digs. Kelly Broussard led WSU with 15 digs.
The Shockers are next in action at the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic at Charles Koch Arena Sept. 4-6. WSU opens the tourney against Lamar at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Fans are invited to come out early to see the unveiling of the Shockers' 2007 MVC championship and NCAA Tournament banners before the Lamar match on Thursday.
