No. 6 Hawai'i Cruises By Louisiana Tech In Three
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The No. 6 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (13-2, 6-0 WAC) swept through the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (2-12, 0-6) 25-15, 25-19 and 25-9 in front of a crowd of 6,480 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
Stephanie Ferrell had a near-perfect night, hitting .778 with eight kills and one hitting error on just nine swings. Jamie Houston had a match-high 10 kills, while hitting .300 with Aneli Cubi-Otineru hitting .417 with seven kills and four digs. Amber Kaufman hit .667 with four kills and four blocks while Dani Mafua had 29 assists, seven digs and two aces.
After allowing Tech the first point of the match, UH ran off four-straight points to go ahead 4-1. LTU was able to pull within two points a few times, the last being at 13-11. But Hawai`i ran away with it as a late six-point run propelled the Rainbow Wahine to a 25-15 win in the first set.
The Rainbow Wahine started the second set by scoring the first three points. But the Lady Techsters reversed the momentum, taking their first lead of the match at 5-4. A five-point run by UH gave them back the lead at 12-8. Hawai`i got its lead as high as 20-11 before taking the second set 25-19.
UH opened a lead of 8-2 to start the third set, and never looked back, getting it to 13-4 and 17-7 before closing the set 25-9 on seven-straight points. Jessica Keefe had three blocks, all coming in the second and third set, while Catherine Fowler combined with Keefe for the match-winning block while going 2-for-2 on hitting attempts in the third set.
Hawai`i will next host WAC contender New Mexico State, who currently sits in second in the standings at 5-1, at 5 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 12.
