No. 3 Emory Downs Claremont-Mudd Scripps at Leopard Invitational
LA VERNE, Calif. - Emory University opened the Leopard Invitational with a four-set triumph over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, topping the Athenas 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23 at Frantz Athletic Court.
In the first two sets, the two teams battled to a 23-23 deadlock with the Eagles claiming the final two points in each to grab a 2-0 sets lead. In the second set, CMS erased a 19-16 deficit with a 7-3 run to even the set only to watch Emory reel off the next points. The Athenas rebounded with a quick start in the third frame, seizing a 17-9 advantage on its way to a 25-17 win.
Emory regained momemtum and held leads of 17-11 and 21-15 before holding off a late Athena rally to take the match.
Alysse Meyer and Dani Huffman paced the Eagles with 14 kills each in the triumph. Emily Hudson registered a match-high 18 kills for the Athenas while Jamie Matusiak collected 12 in the defeat.
