No. 3 La Verne Sweeps Past Lakeland, Nebraska Wesleyan
LA VERNE, Calif. - The University of La Verne volleyball team resumed action with consecutive sweeps on Friday at Frantz Athletic Court, defeating Lakeland College in afternoon action before topping Nebraska Wesleyan in the nightcap.
The Leopards, ranked third nationally in Division III, won 25-21, 25-17, 28-26 over Nebraska Wesleyan to run its record to 16-2 overall.
Against NWU, La Verne broke away in the late stages of the first set by winning 6 of the final 8 points to take a 1-0 set lead. The Leos seized control early in the second stanza by grabbing a 20-10 en route to a 2-0 set advantage. The third set produced a see-saw affair, with the Prairie Wolves fighting off two match points at 23-24 and 24-25 to win the next two points for a 26-25 edge to grab a set point of their own. However, the Leopards would retake the lead at 27-26 and eventually finish the contest on a kill by Anna Calmer.
La Verne began the day with a 25-21, 25-11, 25-9 triumph over Lakeland. The Leopard defense proved formidable by holding the Muskies to a -.074 hitting percentage. The Leos collected 7 total blocks while also registering 46 digs for the match.
Brianna Gonzales totaled 11 kills against Lakeland with Crista Jones and Calmer collecting 6 kills each. Yesenia Lopez finished with 16 assists.
The Leopards begin the second round of SCIAC competition Tuesday night as they host No. 19 Cal Lutheran at Frantz Athletic Court. Start time is 7:30 pm.
