No. 24 Lewis Upends Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0
KENOSHA, Wis. - Thanks to a match-high 10 kills by senior Justina Begemann, No. 24 Lewis defeated Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match on Tuesday evening.
Begemann was just short of a double-double with eight digs. Fresh off being named to the Flyer Festival All-Tournament Team, sophomore Lauren Seliga notched a career-high five aces. She also added eight digs and five kills. Junior Kim Richards had a good night serving as well, recording three aces. It was Richards' fifth straight match of two or more aces. The reigning GLVC Player of the Week, sophomore Danielle Mount, pounded home seven kills with no errors and a .500 hitting percentage. Sophomore Rachel Ruedi had 31 assists, nine digs and three kills. Senior Lauren Hatter had eight digs.
Set one featured four lead changes and nine ties. With Lewis training by one at 14-13, the Flyers took control with five straight points. Two kills by both Begemann and Ruedi during the run helped spur the rally. The Rangers got within one at 24-23 after two straight aces. Lewis called a timeout to pause the Rangers' momentum, and it worked. UWP's next serve was an error and set one went to the Flyers.
A 6-0 run in set two turned an 8-7 deficit into a 13-8 Flyers' lead. All three of Richards' aces came during this stretch.
Lewis trailed set three 22-21 when the Flyers called a timeout. After the break it was all Lewis. A Ruedi kill followed by two by freshman Colleen Mitros gave the Flyers match point. Seliga's fifth ace of the match ended it and gave the Flyers the sweep.
The Flyers improve to 6-3 (1-0 GLVC) while the Rangers fall to 3-7 (0-2 GLVC). Lewis hosts Bellarmine on Friday and Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
