No. 10 Wisconsin-Oshkosh Clinch A Portion Of WIAC Title

OSHKOSH, Wisc. - UW-Oshkosh earned a share of the 2008 WIAC women's volleyball championship by defeating UW-Platteville, 3-1, on Wednesday (Oct. 22) in Platteville.

The Titans ousted the Pioneers in set scores of 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16 to finish in a tie for first place in the WIAC standings with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire both compiled 7-1 WIAC records, with the Blugolds securing their piece of the league's top prize with Wednesday's 3-0 victory over UW-Superior. UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire tied for second place in last year's WIAC race.

UW-Oshkosh's WIAC title is its third in four years and ninth overall. Prior to this season, UW-Oshkosh captured WIAC championships in 1982, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 2001, 2005 and 2006. The Titans shared titles with UW-Whitewater in 2001 and 2005 and UW-Eau Claire in 2006. UW-Eau Claire also won the WIAC championship in 1987.

UW-Oshkosh (26-2) hit .323 as it defeated UW-Platteville by a 3-1 count for the third time this season. The Titans hit .194 in set one, .353 in set two, .258 in set three and .471 in set four.

Megan Fischer (Jr. • Manitowoc) had 11 kills to lead UW-Oshkosh, while Kelsey Mauer (Fr. • Sheboygan Falls), Jacque Ray (Jr. • Richland Center) and Ashley Sullivan (So. • DeForest) added nine each. The Titans also benefited from the 46 assists, eight digs and three service aces of Katelyn Vara (Jr. • New Berlin), 13 digs and eight kills of Andrea Smith (So. • Fond du Lac) and the 10 digs and three service aces of Christina Cahoon (So. • Watertown).

UW-Platteville (14-13/4-4 WIAC) hit .235 and stayed in the match thanks to 16 UW-Oshkosh service errors. The Pioneers hit .182 in set one, .355 in set two, .169 in set three and .222 in set four.

UW-Platteville was led by Melissa Hillebrand's 13 kills and Lisa Bell's 10 kills and six blocks. Rachel Chapman and Sam Plomb had eight kills each, while Ali Sikic totaled 40 assists and Abby Carey 16 digs. Chapman also tallied 12 digs.

By virtue of its 3-0 win over UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 4, UW-Eau Claire will be the top seed for the WIAC Tournament that begins on Nov. 4. The Blugolds open quarterfinal round action by hosting eighth-seeded UW-Stout, while second-seeded UW-Oshkosh entertains seventh-seeded UW-Superior.

Other quarterfinal round matches have sixth-seeded UW-River Falls at third-seeded UW-La Crosse and fifth-seeded UW-Platteville at fourth-seeded UW-Whitewater.

Quarterfinal round winners will advance to the semifinals at the site of the highest remaining seed on Nov. 7. The site will also host the third-place and championship contests on Nov. 8. The winner of the WIAC Tournament earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, closes its regular season schedule with four matches at both the UW-La Crosse Invitational on Oct. 24-25 and the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
