No. 6 St. Thomas Beats Macalester 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Thomas, the No. 6-ranked team in the NCAA Division III, improved to 23-2 on the season with a sweep over the Scots at the Leonard Center. Game scores were 25-11, 25-22 and 25-14. Now riding a 23-match winning streak against MIAC opponents, the Tommies hit .311 on the night.

Majra Mucic (So., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park, Minn.)) led the way for Macalester with eight kills, while Taylor Tinkham (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) slammed seven kills. Marie Godwin (So., Chaska, Minn.) led the defensive effort with 11 digs, while Danielle Dweck (Fy., Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) added nine to go along with 16 assists.

St. Thomas keeps its hold on first place in the conference race, improving to 8-0. Macalester is now 4-22 overall and 0-9 in the MIAC.

Katie McCaffrey spiked 13 kills to go along with five blocks and a .407 hitting percentage, and Emily Foster handed out 34 assists to lead the Toms. MIAC all-time dig leader Katie Kremer led the back row effort with 17 digs.

The Scots hung close with powerhouse UST early in the first set, trailing 11-8 before the Toms staged a 14-3 run to close things out. Macalester played its best volleyball in the second set, hitting .265 and leading 18-14 at one point. The score was deadlocked 19-19, but St. Thomas escaped with the three-point decision. UST hit .429 in set three to claim the sweep, turning an 11-8 lead into a 25-14 victory.

Macalester closes out the season with a pair of home matches next week. The Scots host No. 20 Gustavus Wednesday (Oct. 29) and Hamline on Friday (Oct. 31).
