No. 8 Hawai'i Sweeps Through Utah State
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The No. 8 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (19-3, 12-1 WAC) swept the Utah State Aggies (9-15, 7-6) 25-19, 25-14 and 25-13 in front of a crowd of 6,094 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.
Jamie Houston continued her solid play, hitting .500 with 13 kills and seven digs, marking the third-straight match that the senior hit at least .500, posting double-digit kill numbers all three nights. Kanani Danielson added seven kills and a match-high 12 digs while Nickie Thomas hit .625 with six kills. Amber Kaufman added six kills and three aces, hitting .429, with Tara Hittle providing 11 digs in the back row. Dani Mafua set the UH offense to a season-high .458 hitting percentage while dishing out 38 assists.
Utah State scored the first three points of the first set and got its lead to 6-4 before a 7-2 UH run gave them an 11-8 edge. The Rainbow Wahine kept pushing, getting its lead to 17-11 before eventually closing the first set 25-19.
Consecutive aces by Kaufman capped a 4-1 start for Hawai`i in set two. The Aggies pulled it back to 6-5, but a four-point UH run pushed the difference to 11-6. Kaufman later served a six-point run to get the Rainbow Wahine advantage to 18-9.
Hawai`i opened a 10-4 lead to start the third set, and never looked back. The team sided out a perfect 14-for-14 during the set while hitting .581 as a team with no hitting errors. Stephanie Ferrell hit .667 with six kills on nine swings in the set, while Catherine Fowler went a perfect 3-for-3.
The Rainbow Wahine next head out on their final road trip of the regular season, playing at Boise State, Idaho and Fresno State on Nov. 6, 8 and 10, respectively.
