No. 10 Wichita State Rallies for 3-1 Win Over Illinois State
NORMAL, Ill. - A career-high 14 kills from Sarah McGee helped the Shockers to a 3-1 win over Illinois State. The Shockers (24-0, 13-0) won by scores of 20-25, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-20.
The Redbirds took an early 3-0 lead in the first set and increased the lead to 15-10 to force a Wichita State timeout. A 5-0 run by the Shockers tied the score at 15, but the Redbirds responded with a 3-0 run of their own to go back up 18-15. ISU continued to lead and took a 25-20 win.
The teams went back-and-forth early in the second set until an ace by Erin Lindsey put the Redbirds up 7-4. A kill by Mary Elizabeth Hooper pulled the Shocks to within 15-14 and an ISU hitting error tied the score at 15. WSU took its first lead at 16-15 after an ace by Amanda Backes, but the Redbirds went back up 21-19 after a kill by Peggy Riessen. A kill by Lindsey Eckenrode tied the score at 23 and a Hooper kill gave the Shockers a 26-24 win.
ISU took a 7-3 lead early, but the Shockers came back to tie it at nine after a kill by Eckenrode. The teams traded points until ISU took an 18-16 lead after a kill. The Shockers responded with a 7-0 run to take a 23-18 lead and won the set 25-19 after a kill by Sarah McGee.
In the fourth set, the teams traded points until the Shockers went up 15-12 on a Redbird hitting error. A McGee kill increased the lead to 19-15 and a McGee and Hooper block gave WSU a 25-20 win.
Backes tied her career-high with 11 kills, while Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 38 assists and Emily Stockman had 22 digs.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Nov. 7 against Southern Illinois.
