No. 1 Concorida-St. Paul Sweeps MSU Moorehead
MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Concordia University volleyball team improved to 30-1 on the season and 19-0 in NSIC play with a 3-0 win over MSU Moorhead (16-13, 10-7 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears posted 56 kills with a .355 hitting average in the 25-20, 25-22, 25-15 win.
The Golden Bears and Dragons played a pretty even first set with Concordia taking a marginal lead early on and finishing with the 25-20 win. The second set required the Bears to pull out a come-from-behind win as the Dragons found success on offense and utilized a CU slow start to pull ahead 14-11. The Golden Bears then ripped open an offensive bag of tricks to take the lead and the 25-22 win.
The final set was all Concordia as the Golden Bears put down 19 kills with just a single hitting error. MSUM also hit well when they were allowed to run their offense, but they could not match CU's power.
Sadie Kessler and Whitney Meierotto each posted 14 kills while Meierotto added 13 digs for her 13th double double of the year. Maria Steinhagen had 13 kills as the third member to finish in double figures for kills. Maggie McNamara had her best blocking match of the year, stuffing one solo block and four assists down to MSUM's court. She also had 54 assists. Mary Slinger topped the defense with 24 digs. The team hit .355 and had 64 digs and seven blocks.
The Dragons were led by Cathy Turner with 12 kills. The team had 41 kills and hit .224 on the afternoon. They had 44 digs, including 15 from Leigh Splittstoesser.
The Golden Bears, already named the 2008 NSIC regular season champions, wrap up the regular season next weekend against St. Cloud State at home.
