No. 5 Emporia State Rebounds With Win at MSSU
JOPLIN, Mo. - The No. 5 Hornets moved their magic number to win their first MIAA volleyball championship to one with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 win at Missouri Southern on Saturday night. Combined with No. 7 Washburn's five set loss at #19 Pittsburg State, ESU now needs to win just one more match to clinch a tie for their first MIAA championship.
The Hornets trailed early in set one as the Lions jumped out to a 5-1 lead to open the match. The Southern lead would balloon to 16-9 before ESU ended the set on a 16-4 run. Brittney Miller would have four kills and a block assist during the run, including the set winner.
The second set was tied at 6-6 when ESU went on a 10-1 run helped by six hitting errors by MSSU. The third set was tied at 13-13 before the Hornets closed out on a 12-5 run. All-American Arica Shepard had kills on three of the final four points for ESU to close out the match.
Miller ended the match with 12 kills on .556 hitting, while Shepard had her 17th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. Ting Liu had 41 assists as ESU hit .301 as a team.
The Hornets will play their final regular season road match on Tuesday at Southwest Baptist before returning to White Auditorium on Friday for a potential top ten match-up with Washburn. With three matches remaining, ESU holds a two match lead in the loss column over Washburn and Truman in the MIAA standings.
