No. 3 La Verne Defeats CMS To Finish 14-0 In SCIAC
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The University of La Verne volleyball team completed a perfect conference campaign with a 3-1 road triumph over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Thursday night in the regular season finale at Ducey Gym in Claremont.
The Leopards topped the Athenas 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-11 to finish 14-0 in conference play and capture its 28th consecutive SCIAC win, the second-longest win streak in league history behind La Verne's record of 56 straight from 2001 to 2005.
After opening with a 25-17 first-set triumph, La Verne (23-2, 14-0) dropped the second set and trailed the Athenas 15-7 before rallying for a 25-21 triumph. The Leopards were aided by a 5-0 run to turn a 19-16 deficit into a 21-19 lead to seize a 2-1 set advantage. From there, the Leopards were never threatened and cruised in the fourth stanza, grabbing leads of 8-3, 15-7 and 20-10. The Leos hit .300 in the fourth set while limiting the Athenas to a -.125 clip.
The tandem of Brianna Gonzales and Crista Jones combined for 23 kills against CMS. Gonzales registered a double-double of 13 kills and 17 digs while Jones hit .429 on her way to a 10-kill effort. Chelsea Sleight collected a match-high 29 digs for La Verne.
"At this time of the year, it's a real value to see your team put a priority on competing," said Leopard head coach Don Flora, whose Leopard squads have gone 108-4 in conference play since the 2000 season. "The depth of our league has adequately prepared for the next phase with the upcoming West Regionals."
La Verne finished the 2008 conference schedule dropping only two sets as 12 of its 14 conference victories ended in sweeps.
La Verne will await the pairings for the upcoming West Region tournament, to be held Nov. 13-15 at Frantz Athletic Court. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced Monday, Nov. 9.
