No. 11 Hillsdale Opens Home Schedule With Sweep of Lake Erie
HILLSDALE, Mi. - As home openers go, the Charger volleyball team will take a 3-0 win.
Playing in front of a large crowd in a steamy gym, the No. 11-ranked Hillsdale College volleyball team swept visiting Lake Erie College 3-0 Tuesday evening at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 4-1 on the season, and will play at the University of Findlay Tournament this weekend.
The Chargers rotated every player on their roster through each set of the match. The combination to start the match played extremely well, as Hillsdale raced out to leads of 12-4 and 24-9. But the Storm served effectively and scored five straight points before Hillsdale could close out the first set with a 25-14 win.
The Chargers took a 7-2 lead to open the second set, but had difficulty pulling away from a resilient Storm team. Hillsdale's last four points in the second set came off LEC errors.
Set three saw Hillsdale fall behind 3-0, but then the Chargers put together a 12-1 run that left no doubt to the result.
Eight different players registered kills in the match, led by freshman Clara Leutheuser's 10. Leutheuser and her freshman teammates displayed the kind of raw talent that should make them fun to watch in the present and future.
Freshman Ashlee Crowder hit .467 in the match to go along with eight kills. Setter Apryl Schmucker played the entire second and third sets, and finished with 19 assists and two kills.
Junior Emily Bennett played well in sets two and three, and matched Crowder's .467 hitting percentage, and had nine kills. The Chargers held the Storm to a negative team hitting percentage in all three sets of the match.
Hillsdale will face Bellarmine, California (Pa.), Gannon and Wheeling-Jesuit at this weekend's tournament in Findlay. The first match Friday tips off at 2:30 p.m.
