California (Pa.) Sweeps Clarion in PSAC Opener
CALIFORNIA (Pa.) - Junior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) collected a double-double as the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team swept Clarion, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Hamer Hall in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opener for both teams.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 5-0 overall this season, while the Golden Eagles suffered their first loss of the 2008 campaign and fall to 4-1.
Nist highlighted the Cal U attack on the night with 11 kills on .348 hitting, while posting 12 digs. Junior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral (Cubatao, Sao Paulo/Afonso Schimidt) collected nine kills and seven digs, while senior Thais Franca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Padre Manoel De Paiva) added eight kills. Junior Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) anchored the Vulcans' defense with 21 digs, while junior setter Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil /Colegio Ateneu) tallied 11 digs to go along with her 33 assists and three service aces.
Cal returns to action this weekend at the two-day, seven-team TownePlace Suites Classic hosted by the University of Findlay (Ohio). The Vulcans begin play at the tournament on Friday, Sept. 5, against Hillsdale College (Mich.) and the host Oilers.
