No. 2 Washburn Rolls to Two More Wins
PUEBLO, Colo. - The second-ranked Lady Blues won two matches Saturday, each in three sets, in the final day of the Colorado State-Pueblo Fall Classic to open the season 4-0. Washburn defeated CSUP 25-20, 25-4, 25-14, to win the opener and then topped Angelo State 25-18, 25-17, 25-13.
The Lady Blues will resume action Friday and Saturday in four matches at a tournament at Missouri-St. Louis.
Stephanie Nitz led Washburn with 11 kills against the ThunderWolves and hit .556 with just one error in 18 attempts. Kate Hampson and Amanda Guess shared the setting duties with Guess getting 17 assists and Hampson 12. Molly Smith led the defense with 11 digs.
Washburn went ahead 3-0 in the opening set then gave up a 6-1 run to CSUP to fall behind 6-4. A 10-1 Lady Blues run later gave them the lead and they held that and the momentum the rest of the way. Jennifer Kolarik served a 16-0 run in the second set that gave WU a 23-3 lead and in the third set Washburn led the whole way after a 1-1 tie.
Ashley Shepard led the Lady Blues against Angelo State with 11 kills and hit .421 while Breanna Lewis had nine kills with a .533 attack percentage. Hampson had 29 assists and Monica Miesner and Smith led with nine digs each.
Washburn was behind 15-12 in the first set before scoring 13 of the last 16 points to win. The Lady Blues led the entire way in the second set and then they built a 20-8 lead in the final set to seal the victory.
- Four different Lady Blues have led the team in scoring in their first four matches. Shepard and Nitz led Saturday and Miesner and Mollie Lacey each led in a match Friday.
- Head coach Chris Herron has gone 4-0 in all seven season-opening tournaments he has coached in at Washburn.
- WU is 2-0 against CSUP and 2-0 against ASU.
