UC Irvine Opens With Sweep Of California Baptist

Riverside, Calif. - Sixth-ranked UC Irvine opened the 2009 season with a 3-0 win over California Baptist (30-26, 30-27, 30-23) at Van Dyne Gym Wednesday.

Down 10-9 in the first set, UCI scored four unanswered which included kills by Taylor Wilson, Kevin Wynne and Jon Steller followed by a Cal Baptist ball-handling error to give the Anteaters the 13-10 lead. UCI continued to lead and watched the Lancers close within 18-17, but the Anteaters went on a 5-1 spurt to go up 23-18. With the help of three aces and six service errors by Cal Baptist, UCI won 30-26.

Cal Baptist trailed 21-18, before going on a 7-2 run to take the 25-23 advantage. With the score tied 27-27, UCI would end the game on a kill by Cole Reinholm, a Lancer attack error and a Nick Goldsbrough-Reardon ace, 30-27. The Anteaters hit .348 (12-4-23) in the second set to the Lancers' .214 (14-8-28).

In the third set, UCI broke open the game with a 6-1 run to go ahead 16-11 and never let the Lancers get closer than three points the rest of the way.

All-American Jon Steller led the Anteaters with 14 kills followed by senior Taylor Wilson with 11 kills. Steller and Wilson each had a team-high four digs. Senior setter Nick Goldsbrough-Reardon tallied 19 set assists and an ace in his Anteater debut. Junior Cole Reinholm had eight kills and joined Kevin Wynne and Bryan Simmons with two total blocks, apiece. Freshman middle blocker Austin D'Amore hit .455 on five kills and no errors in 11 swings.

Adield Tiedjop was the only Lancer in double figure kills with 15. Tiedjop and Micah Tokuda each had a match-high six digs.  CBU out-blocked UCI 7-4, but hit just .195 for the match.

The Anteaters will participate in the 45th annual UCSB/Elephant Bar Tournament Friday and Saturday (Jan. 9-10) in Santa Barbara. UCI's first opponent Friday at 1:00 p.m. is No. 4 Long Beach State.
