No. 5 Cal State Northridge Advances to UCSB/Elephant Bar Invitational Final
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Eric Vance and junior Mike Gaudino combined for 34 kills as fifth-ranked Cal State Northridge advanced to the UCSB/Elephant Bar championship match with a 30-28, 30-23, 28-30, 30-21 win over UC Santa Barbara Friday night at Robertson Gym.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 2-0 and will play in the championship match for the first time since 2005. The loss evens the Gauchos' record at 1-1.
Vance led Northridge with 19 kills (.350) while Gaudino added 15 kills (.323). Vance also added four aces and seven digs. Sophomore Tanner Nua reached double figures for the second straight match with 11 kills (.129) and also served up four aces. Junior Kevin McKniff chipped in nine kills (.353) and four blocks while Jacek Ratajczak had a team-high six blocks (one solo). Freshman Matt Stork's 53 assists led the Matadors to a solid .277 hitting clip while Ali'i Keohohou recorded a match-high 11 digs.
Jeff Menzel led the Gauchos with a match-high 27 kills (.250) and also added three aces and seven digs.
Cal State Northridge will meet Stanford for the tournament championship Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
