No. 2 UCLA Falls to No. 6 UC Irvine in Three at UCSB Invitational
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No.2 ranked UCLA men's volleyball team fell in three games to No.6 UC Irvine Saturday at the 45th Annual UCSB Invitational.
The Anteaters won 32-30, 30-25, 30-25 in 90 minutes in front of 117 fans. UCI raised its record to 3-1 and finished fifth. The Bruins fell to 1-2 and placed sixth.
UCI served 11 aces and disrupted the Bruins' passing attack enough to cause a .196 hitting percentage. The Anteaters hit .338, led by 15 kills from Jordan DuFault, who hit .565.
UCLA led 28-26 in the first set before an attack error and a UCI block knotted the score at 28. The teams traded points until a kill by UCI's Taylor Wilson was followed by another Bruin attack error to give UCI the two-point victory.
The score was tied at 15 in the second set before UCI reeled off seven straight points to take the 22-15 advantage. The Anteaters eventually won by five.
UCI used a late run in the third set, outscoring UCLA 4-1 on a pair of kills by DuFault, a kill by Kevin Wynne and an ace by Ryan Ammerman to go up 26-21.
Freshmen Kyle Caldwell and Jack Polales led the Bruins with 12 kills apiece. Junior Garrett Muagututia added five kills, four aces and four block assists.
The Bruins will begin conference play on Wed., Jan. 14 against CS Northridge at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
