No. 7 Southern California Defeates No. 10 Ohio State in Four Games
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Murphy Troy had a match-best 26 kills with 3 aces and teammate Sean Dennis added 18 kills while hitting .517 and 8 digs to help the No. 7-ranked USC men's volleyball team beat No. 10 Ohio State, 30-18, 30-28, 25-30, 31-29, on Saturday (Jan. 10) in the final round of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu.
The Trojans ended up with a 2-1 record, after previously falling in the opener to No. 1, defending NCAA champion Penn State in 5 games on Thursday (Jan. 8) and then sweeping host No. 13 Hawaii on Friday (Jan. 9). The Buckeyes fell to 0-3, after also having lost to the Nittany Lions and Warriors.
USC outhit Ohio State, .293 to .224, and had more aces (9 to 4), but the Buckeyes outblocked the Trojans (14.5 to 7.5).
Tony Ciarelli added 12 kills, a match-high 10 digs and 5 aces for the Trojans, while Riley McKibbin had 59 aces, 5 digs and 4 blocks and Luke Morris had 9 digs.
Ohio State was led by Robbie Klein, who had 18 kills, 6 digs and 4 blocks, and Red Schoenfeldt, with 12 kills and 6 digs.
USC next hosts Hope International in its home opener on Friday (Jan. 16) in the Galen Center at 7 p.m.
