LORETTO, Pa. - The New York University men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Division I St. Francis University on Friday, Jan. 16, at the DeGol Arena in Loretto, PA.

The Violets (0-3), ranked fifth in the Bison/AVCA Division III Top 15 Coaches Preseason Poll, quickly found themselves eight back of the Red Flash (0-1) in the first set at 16-8. NYU tried to make a come-back, staying within eight most of the way.  However, they could not come any closer, falling 30-20.

In the second set, the Red Flash once again jumped out to an early lead at 10-6. However, this time St. Francis continued to build on it, taking the set 30-25.

The third set saw a change of heart of the players on NYU. This time the team did not allow the Red Flash to take more than a two-point lead early on.  The Violets eventually pulled even at 10-10.  However, after a St. Francis timeout at 18-18, the Red Flash went on a quick three-point run to take a 21-18.  They then held the lead the rest of the way, taking the final set 30-25.

Senior captain Devin Zolnowski led the Violets on offense for the third consecutive match, putting down nine kills while adding three digs and a service ace.

Sophomore Francis Hodgson was also a contributer at the net, putting down four kills while adding a team-high three blocks.

On defense, freshman Jay Hayes led the way for the third straight match, putting up five digs.

For the Red Flash, junior Jordan Varee led the way with 16 kills while three different players put up six digs on defense.

The Violets return to action next weekend when they travel to Hoboken, NJ, to take part in the Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational. NYU will take on host Stevens at 3:00 pm on Friday and will face Hunter College and Nazareth College at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm, respectively, on Saturday.
