DIII No. 10 Rivier Too Much for No. 7 Ramapo
MAHWAH, N.J. - The Ramapo College men's volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 (23-30, 28-30, 30-23, 22-30) decision tonight to the Raiders of Rivier College, posting their first loss of the 2009 season. Ramapo falls to 2-1 overall while Rivier improves to 4-1.
After falling in games one (23-30) and two (28-30), the Roadrunners fought back to take the third game, of the best out of five match-up, by seven points (30-23), hitting a combined .483 as a team. The Roadrunners put down 18 kills led by senior Shane Donohue (Freehold Twp., NJ) with six. In game one, Donohue recorded five of the team's 16 kills while tallying two service aces. Matt Ferreira (Lincoln, RI) hit a perfect 7-7 for Rivier in game one, while adding a team leading six in the second. Ramapo hit just shy of River in the second game, .205 to .250, while falling behind in the hitting category, .222 to .440 in game one. The final game went to Rivier, 30-22, behind seven kills from Scott Wright (Salem, NH) and a combined 19 as a team. Ramapo put away 11 kills on 41 attempts.
On the night, Rivier hit .298 ahead of Ramapo's .233. Ferreira recorded 19 kills while Wright finished with 14. Kyle O'Neill (Long Beach, NY) led the team with 12 digs and Zach Hansen (Shelton, CT) dished out 53 assists while adding 12 digs of his own. For the Roadrunners, Donohue recorded a team high 17 kills and four service aces while Tom Kohler (East Brunswick, NJ) and TC Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) chipped in 12 kills each. Rookie Colin McNeill (Little Falls, NJ) added ten kills on the night. Jairo Sierra (Fair Lawn, NJ) dished out 48 assists and Kurt Backlund (Old Bridge, NJ) led the defense with seven digs.
On court #2, Sacred Heart and PBU played to five games after PBU took game one, 30-27, Sacred Heart snatched game two and three, 30-27, 40-38, and PBU took the fourth, 30-25. The fifth and final game went to Sacred Heart, 15-13, to take the match, 3-2. Justin Brubaker (Telford, PA) led PBU with 25 kills and 19 digs while Leo Dueck (Lititz, PA) added 22. Dueck recorded 32 digs in the match and Drew Dillon (Mount Joy, PA) dished out 66 assists. Sacred Heart's Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) recorded 15 kills and Tim Sadowski (Salem, NH) dished out a team high 55 assists.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow when they take on Sacred Heart University at 11:00 AM, and PBU at 2:00 PM. Rivier faces off with PBU at 11:00 AM while taking on Sacred Heart at 2:00 PM.
