DIII No. 9 Ramapo Takes Two in Tri-Match

MAHWAH, N.J. -  The Ramapo College men's volleyball team went 2-0 today in a men's volleyball tri-match-up at the Bradley Center. The Roadrunners improve to 6-1 overall with their 3-0 shut out victories over Polytechnic and New Haven. With their win over Polytechnic, the Roadrunners earn their first NECVA Metro conference win of the year, improving to 1-0. New Haven defeated Polytechnic, 3-0, going 1-1 on the day, to stand at 1-1 overall on the year. Polytechnic falls to 1-4 overall, 0-2 in the NECVA Metro conference.

In Ramapo's second match of the day, senior setter Jairo Sierra (Fair Lawn, NJ) recorded his 3,000th career assist.  He finished the match with 24 total, his 12th of the match marking the 3,000.

Ramapo 3 - Polytechnic 0:
The Roadrunners opened the day with a 3-0 (30-11, 30-20, 30-20) victory over the Fighting Blue Jays of Polytechnic University, led by rookie Colin McNeill (Little Falls, NJ), who recorded 12 kills and three blocks. Junior Elvis Cabrera (Clifton, NJ) put down eight kills on 11 attempts with only one error hitting .636, while sophomore Matt Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) added six kills on 12 attempts with no errors. Sophomore Matt Scott (Edison, NJ) dished out a team high 37 assists and Josh Castillo (Garfield, NJ) led the defense with 11 digs. The Roadrunners combined hitting .330 with 49 kills on 94 attempts. Robert Petri (St. Louis, MO) led Polytechnic with ten kills while Thomas Poppenberg (Springville, NY) recorded a team high seven digs. Jay Kwon (Bethpage, NY) dished out 16 assists. The team combined for 18 kills on 74 attempts with 24 errors hitting -.081 in the match.

New Haven 3 - Polytechnic 0:
The Chargers of New Haven University defeated Polytechnic, 3-0 (30-19, 30-12, 30-23) in the day's second match-up. Led by Peter Kazlas (Allentown, PA), the Chargers combined for 49 kills on 95 attempts with 16 errors, hitting .347 in the win. Kazlas recorded 12 kills while Gregg Brisbin (Richland, NJ) added ten of his own. Ryan Earl (Greenville, NY) dished out 42 assists and John Sedlock (Shelton, CT) led the defense with eight digs. Petri led Polytechnic's offensive attack once again with six kills while Joseph Gabor (Warwick, NY) recorded a team high nine digs. Kwon added 12 assists on the day. Polytechnic hit -.086 in the loss with 15 kills on 58 attempts with 20 errors.

Ramapo 3 - New Haven 0:
Ramapo wrapped up the day with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-18, 30-23) win over Division II New Haven.  Sierra dished out 24 assists in the win while Jeff Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) led the team's offensive attack with 12 kills.  Tom Kohler (East Brunswick, NJ) recorded ten kills and Shane Donohue (Freehold Twp., NJ) added seven.  The team combined hitting .387 with 45 kills on 75 attempts.  Scott added 13 assists in the game.  New Haven put down 25 kills as a team with Kazlas leading the way once again with nine.  Earl dished out 22 assists.  The team hit .051 in the loss. 

The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, February 4th when they travel to CCNY for a 7:00 PM match-up.
