PELLA, Iowa - Even with a home crowd on its side for the first time this season, the Central College volleyball team dropped its Iowa Conference opener to preseason favorite Simpson College 25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 25-18 Tuesday night at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

It looked as if the Dutch may have turned things around in the second set.

"I was really proud of the way we played in the second set," said Dutch head coach Kent Clayberg. "But sometimes an easy win like that can be a bad thing, because it's not going to be that easy again no matter who you play."

Central received strong performances from outside hitter Miranda Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Iowa, Wahlert HS) who recorded 16 kills in the match, as well as setter Megan Callahan (senior, Dubuque, Iowa, Wahlert HS) who tallied 29 assists.

Simpson's Tara Christensen had 36 assists on the night, and both Amy Schuster and Whitney Oviatt had 13 kills.

"We really went after it tonight," said Clayberg. "It wasn't an issue of effort. We got out of our system a bit in the first game, and we never really got into the last two games.

"But overall I think our defense was setting well, and our offense was running well when we could get into it."

Clayberg said the team's biggest problem right now is experience, and only time will be able to overcome that.

It's nothing big," Clayberg said. "It's recognizing some things, and we need to tweak a few things. We'll get better. We're making progress, and we're recognizing more than we did three weeks ago."

After a weekend off the Dutch face another pivotal league match, taking on Wartburg College next Tuesday, Sept. 16 in a 7:30 p.m. contest at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
