HARRISONBURG, Va. - Freshman Chris Davidson (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) had a career-high 16 kills to lead the Eastern Mennonite University men's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over D'Youville College Friday night in Yoder Arena.

Game scores were 31-29, 27-30, 30-11, and 30-26.

The win puts the Royals at 13-15 overall on the season. D'Youville drops to 9-12.

"We had a hicup in game two, losing some consistency, but came back strong in game three," explained head coach Steve Benson. "Were a little banged up with injuries, but we had some players step up and help us in different roles."

Sophomore Shane Holderby (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) had 13 kills and two solo blocks while freshman Cody Kennedy (Newport News, Va./Menchville) registered 10 kills and eight digs.

Senior libero Cory Parsons (Colmar, Pa./Christopher Dock), and Holderby matched Kennedy with eight digs each.

Matt Frey had a team lead 19 kills for DYC. Jeremy Sajdak had a double-double with 38 assists and 14 digs in the loss.

EMU struggled in the first game, hitting only .159 (16-9-44), the lowest mark in the four game match. D'Youville, which hit an even lower .105 (12-8-38), took advantage of the opportunities presented to them by pulling ahead 29-26 following a pair of EMU attack errors. With the game almost in hand, the Royals mounted a comeback as sophomore middle Frankie Coto (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) ignited a 5-0 run with a big kill off an over ball. Back-to-back kills by Holderby tied the game at 29 all. Following a DYC timeout, EMU took advantage of a Spartan attack error to seal the win as junior Curtis Reesor (Stouffville, Ontario/Stouffville District) served home the game winning ace.

In the second game the Royals hit a higher .220 (16-7-41) compared to a .118 (13-9-34) mark for D'Youville, yet the Spartans again took advantage of several EMU miscues to take the three-point win. Frey had a team leading five kills in the second stanza while Brett Peters added a kill and a solo block late in the game to stifle an EMU rally.

The Royals played their best ball, statistically, in the third frame as Kennedy led the squad with three kills in four attempts. EMU built its lead to 18-4 at one point as another kill by Coto and a service ace by freshman Kendall Garber (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) closed out the scoring.

EMU hit .450 (10-1-20) in the third game.

The final game of the night saw the Royals jump out to a 20-15 lead only to have DYC battle back and close the game to 24-21. EMU inched ahead on a kill by freshman John Bottles (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) only to have D'Youville respond with a kill from Chris Gluc. The back-and-forth battle ensued until the final point of the match as a perfect set by freshman Nolan Prock (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) landed right in the wheelhouse of Holderby who blasted home the game winning kill, giving him a team high seven for the frame.

Prock finished with 42 assists, seven digs, and three assisted blocks. Garber notched three service aces while Coto had seven kills, two aces, a solo block and four assisted blocks.

The Royals will look for the two-day sweep tomorrow as they host the Spartans at 1 p.m., in Yoder Arena.
