No. 9 UCLA Beats No. 13 Hawai'i in Four
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The ninth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team defeated No. 13 Hawai'i Friday night in Pauley Pavilion to raise its home record this season to 8-3.
The Bruins won 25-30, 31-29, 30-23, 30-22 in one hour and 55 minutes in front of 892 fans. UCLA's second straight victory raised its record to 12-13 overall and 9-10 in league play. Hawai'i fell to 6-17, 3-15 and is now 0-10 on the road.
Junior Garrett Muagututia hammered 20 kills (.459) for the first time in more than a month. He blasted 10 kills in the second game when the Bruins watched a three-point lead (12-9) evaporate into a 24-26 deficit. Down the stretch, it was Muagututia who pulled them back with a pair of crucial kills and a couple of blocks.
Muagututia was aided by freshman Jack Polales who recorded 14 kills (.357) and 16.0 points and senior Sean O'Malley's 13 kills (.312), two aces and 16.0 points. Junior setter Kevin Ker added 57 assists, an ace and four total blocks and senior Jamie Diefenbach came off the bench and contributed six kills (.444) and 6.5 points.
Hawai'i's Steven Hunt, who recorded 28 kills on Thursday night, was held to 14 (.083) on Friday. Joshua Walker led the Warriors with 19 kills (.432).
UCLA's home stand continues next week with matches against Pepperdine (Apr. 8) and USC (Apr. 10).
