No. 11 Ohio State Wins Third Consecutive MIVA Regular Season Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (13-9 overall, 9-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team, with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-25) sweep of IPFW (12-11, 3-4), won the outright MIVA Championship Friday night in St. John Arena. It marks OSU's third consecutive title and 21st overall for the program. OSU's Ted Schoenfeldt posted a team-high 17 points with 14 kills (.360) two ace serve and two assist blocks. John Klanac added 13 points with nine kills (.350), two ace serve and four assist blocks. IPFW's Ben Duckworth scored a match-high 19.5 points for the Mastodons with 18 kills (.270) and three assist blocks. Darryl Shank added 9.5 points with eight kills and three assist blocks.

Ohio State, with kills from John Albertson, Klein and Schoenfeldt, opened game one with a 3-0 lead. At 6-3, three consecutive IPFW errors gave OSU a 9-3 lead. Mastodon kills from Shank and Nathaniel Berg and two IPFW errors made it 11-5. Kills from Klanac and Albertson and an OSU error made it 13-6. Kills from Klanac and Albertson and an IPFW error made it 16-6. OSU held the lead and reached game point at 29-20 with a Schoenfeldt kill. A Mastodon error ended the game at 30-20 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .448 for the game to .065 for IPFW.

A Shank kill gave IPFW a 1-0 lead in game two. A kill from Schoenfeldt, an ace serve from Klanac and two IPFW errors opened a 4-1 Ohio State lead. A Shank kill and a Mastodon error made it 5-2. Kills from Berg and Duckworth cut the OSU lead to one at 5-4. Klein and Berg recorded kills to make it 6-5. Ohio State went ahead at 8-5 with kills from Klein and Klanac. IPFW responded with a Duckworth kill and a Duckworth-Oliver Kook block to make it 8-7. A Heine kill and a Klanac-Albertson-Schoenfeldt block made it 10-7. After a Duckworth kill made it 10-8, Ohio State scored the next five points to open a 15-8 lead. The run began with an Albertson kill and an IPFW error at 12-8. Kills from Schoenfeldt and Klanac and an ace serve from Schoenfeldt made it 15-8. The Mastodons trailed by eight at 26-18 when a Klein kill and two IPFW errors set game point at 29-18. An OSU error made it 29-19. Kevin Heine, with a kill, ended the game at 30-19 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .441 in the game to .154 for IPFW.

Game three featured 10 ties and five lead changes. Tied at 13, a Schoenfeldt kill gave OSU the lead for good at 14-13. An Albertson-Klanac block and a Klanac kill made it 16-13. A Shank kill made it 16-14. An error by the Mastodons and a Schoenfeldt ace serve gave Ohio State an 18-14 lead. A Shank kill and an OSU error made it 18-16. A Mastodon error and a Steven Kehoe-Albertson block made the OSU lead four at 20-16. A Buckeye error and a kill from Albertson made it 21-17. A kill from Phil Peterson and a Peterson-Kook block made it 21-19. The Mastodons closed to within one at 21-20 with a Duckworth-Kook block. After an Ohio State time out, kills from Klein and Schoenfeldt made it 23-20 as IFPW called time out. Kills from Duckworth and Klein made it 24-21. Two Mastodon errors and a Duckworth kill made it 26-22. An OSU block from Albertson and Klanac made it 27-22 as IPFW called time out. An OSU error and a Berg kill cut the lead to three at 27-24. An Albertson kill and an OSU error made it 28-25. A Mastodon error set match point at 29-25. Ohio State closed out the game with an ace serve from Klanac to win, 30-25, and win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .294 for the game to .211 for IFPW.

Ohio State hit .392 for the match to .148 for IPFW. The Buckeyes had a 51-40 advantage in kills and a 44-34 margin in assists. OSU's Kehoe had a match-high 38 assists. IPFW's Corey Stewart had 18 assists and Dan Mader added 13. The Buckeyes recorded five ace serves in the contest while IPFW did not score an ace. OSU's Klanac and Schoenfeldt shared match-high honors with two aces each. Ohio State gave up 11 service errors to nine for the Mastodons. The Buckeye had a 34-28 advantage in digs against the Mastodons. OSU's Mik Berzins recorded a match-high 10 digs in the contest. At the net, IPFW edged Ohio State, 8.5 to 7.5 in team blocks. Kook posted a match-high six assist blocks for the Mastodons while OSU's Albertson and Klanac recorded four assist blocks each.

Ohio State closes out the regular season at home next week with 7 p.m. matches against St. Francis Friday and seventh-ranked Penn State Saturday.

The win over IPFW gives Ohio State the No. 1 seed and a quarterfinal bye in the MIVA Tournament. The Buckeyes will host the tournament semifinals, Thursday April 30 and the championship, Saturday, May 2 in St. John Arena.
