No. 14 Loyola-Chicago Advances To MIVA Semifinals With 3-0 Victory Over IPFW
CHICAGO, Ill. - Battling IPFW for the second time in a week, the fourteenth-ranked Loyola men's volleyball team was victorious in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association quarterfinal action Friday night, claiming a 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-28) win in Alumni Gym to advance to the semifinal round at top-seeded Ohio State next Thursday night. The Ramblers improve to 17-9, while the Mastodons end the season at 12-15.
Game one was a battle right from the start, as the two teams exchanged points for most of the opening round. With the score even at 17, Loyola used a 3-0 run behind a kill by Domenic Dewaele and two Mastodon attack errors to take a 20-17 advantage. IPFW would pull within one at 21-20, but the Ramblers responded with a 4-0 run, as kills by Krisjanis Berzins, Michael Morice and Kyle Exline and a Mastodon attack error helped extend the lead to five, 25-20. IPFW never got closer than three the rest of the way and ultimately fell 30-26.
Loyola took control of the lead early in the second game, jumping out to a 13-7 advantage after kills by George Kamberos, Nick Lamoureux and Exline. IPFW rallied back to cut the deficit to one at 20-19, before the Ramblers used a 3-0 run a couple plays later to take a 27-22 and held on for the 30-26 win.
The Mastodons were in front for most of the third game, jumping out to leads of 16-11 and 24-21 down the stretch, but similar to last week's match, Loyola buckled down and was eventually able to tie it at 25 after a kill by Kamberos and IPFW attack error. With the score even at 28, Berzins notched a kill and Exline sealed the come back with a service ace to take the third game, 30-28.
Kamberos was just one off his season high with a match-best 16 kills, six digs and .542 (16-3-24) hitting percentage, while Berzins added 12 kills and Exline tallied a match-high 34 assists. As a team, the Ramblers out-hit IPFW, .340 (49-17-94) to .156 (38-24-90).
No. 4-seed Loyola will now travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on top-seeded Ohio State in the second semifinal match Thursday night (April 30) at 6:30 p.m. Central.
