NCAA President Myles Brand Passes Away
The AVCA is saddened to learn of the passing of NCAA President Myles Brand. Brand was the first university president to serve as the Association's chief executive and a champion of academic reform, fiscal responsibility and student-athlete well-being. He died Wednesday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 67.
"Dr. Brand was unique in the way he cared about all sports and all divisions," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "He readily agreed to visit with me about volleyball when I started as executive director and each year tried to find an opening in his calendar to be at our Convention. I'm deeply saddened that our membership didn't get a chance to meet him."
Brand was scheduled to deliver the keynote address during the jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon at the 2008 AVCA Convention in Omaha, Neb., but regretfully had to cancel because his illiness had grounded him.
The AVCA sends its deepest condolences to Brand's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
