Saraceno Keeps Gauchos' Streak Alive as USCB Notches Three More Wins
Sept. 29 - Rebecca Saraceno, a senior outside hitter for UC Santa Barbara, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week. She earned the award after her solid play in leading the Gauchos to an 11-2 record to date, the program's best start to the season since 2002. Saraceno began the week with her first of three double-doubles, tallying 14 kills (.323), 18 digs and two aces in a sweep of Loyola Marymount. She continued by drilling 12 kills and collecting 11 digs, three assists, a block and an ace in a whitewashing of UC Riverside. Saraceno finished the week with her best performance, notching her eighth double-double of the season in a thrilling five-set upset of then-No. 21 UC Irvine. She racked up a career-high 29 kills, good for a .343 hitting percentage, and also contributed 15 digs, two aces and a block. The 29 kills was also the third-best total in school history since the rally scoring era began. For the week, Saraceno averaged 5.00 kills and 4.00 digs per set, while hitting .328. This is the sixth time an athlete from UC Santa Barbara has received the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week award, with the last honor given Nov. 15, 2004 to Kristin Nelson. The Gauchos are coached by Kathy Gregory.
