SAN FRANCISCO -- Unbeaten Cal State San Bernardino won its 18th straight match this season, 3-0, over a good San Francisco State team Saturday night to give Head Coach Kim Cherniss the 400th victory of her collegiate coaching career.
Helping Cherniss reach that milestone were middle blocker Samantha Middleborn with a match-high 10 kills on .562 hitting with three service aces and six block assists. Jane Chafeh, ranked No. 3 in the nation in kills per set, had nine kills and 10 digs. Libero Camille Smith had a career-high 20 digs.
The No.2-ranked Coyotes are now 18-0 on the season, 11-0 in the CCAA while the Gators, in only their second year of CCAA play after being without a program for four years, are now 14-5 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. SFSU was in each set for awhile, but fell 25-15, 25-15, 25-18.
Two other Coyote front-line players -- Megan Johnson and Morgan Carty -- also had solid nights. Johnson had seven kills on .636 hitting while Carty had seven kills three service aces and three block assists. All-America setter Sara Hoffman had 30 assists.
Beth Perkins led the Gators with nine kills and eight digs.
The Coyotes hit .300 for the match while the Gators hit just .057 primarily because of CSUSB's strong net game with 16 blocks.
SFSU took an early 5-3 lead in the first set but the Coyotes took over the lead at 10-9 on a kill by senior Ashtin Hall and then outscored the Gators 10-2 for a 20-11 lead on a combined block by Hoffman and Middleborn. Carty put the Coyotes at set point on a kill off an assist by Hall.
The Coyotes got off to a faster start in set two, taking a 10-4 lead on a kill by Chafeh and later expanding the lead to 21-11 on a solo block by Chafeh of Kyle Lamet.
The Gators got off to a fast start in the third set, leading 6-2 on a kill by Lauren Hoffman but the Coyotes forged ahead at 10-9 on a kill by Johnson. Leading just 15-14 after a kill by the Gators' Brittany Powell, CSUSB outscored the Gators 10-4 down the stretch to close out the match on a service ace by Middleborn.
CSUSB led in kills 39-27,  in digs 48-35 and in assists 37-24.
The Coyotes will have a hopscotch road trip next week, playing at Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Friday night, then flying to San Diego to play the No. 3-ranked UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday night.
