Sept. 8, 2009 The Concordia Cougars improved to 4-1 on the season with a workmanlike 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 victory over North Park University in the Vikings Carlson Gymnasium this evening. The win was the 100th in the career of seventh-year head coach Kathy Gebhardt.

The Cougars prevailed in a defensive struggle, keeping the Vikings on their heels with timely hits and strong play at the net. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Potter (New Haven, IN/Woodlan) contributed to the win with seven kills and seven digs, and her play was key during a brief stretch in the second set when the Cougars ran off six straight points to take an 18-12 lead and gain control of the match. Concordias outside hitters continued to be a bane to North Park, as Alex Pinotti (Evergreen Park, IL/H.S.) also recorded seven kills, and Jordan Scifres (Greenwood, IN/Indianapolis Lutheran) chipped in with two kills and an ace in the third set to help the Cougars close out the match.

Jacquie Boatman (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) stood strong in the middle with six kills, and sophomore Amanda Allen (Deerfield, WI/H.S.) gave another big effort off the bench with three blocks and two kills, including the final point of the match. Nancy Wietfeldt (Monroeville, IN/Concordia Lutheran) frustrated the North Park hitters in the back row with 19 digs, and the overall defense helped limit North Park to a .101 hitting percentage.

The Cougars will return to North Park on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Vikings Invitational. Concordia will take on North Central, Otterbein, Ripon and Illinois College.
