NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week (Oct. 21, 2009)

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Oct. 21, 2009) - Mercedes Tuia of New Mexico Military Institute, Scottsdale Community College's (Ariz.) Erin Flake and Nicole Spruille of Richland College (Tex.) have been named the NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week.

Division I

Mercedes Tuia (Faga'itia; Pago Pago, AS) captured five double-doubles last week for New Mexico Military Institute as they went 5-0, including a win over top conference opponent Frank Phillips. She averaged 3.7 kills and 4.17 blocks per set and added two blocks and four aces.

Division II

Erin Flake, a Mountain View, Arizona native averaged 2.86 kills, 1.4 blocks and 1 dig per set last week to earn NJCAA DII Player of the Week honors.  The Scottsdale sophomore recorded 13 kills against South Mountain, who received votes in the national poll, as well as four blocks, five digs and two aces.  Later in the week she had seven kills, six blocks and two digs against Chandler-Gilbert.

Division III

Nicole Spruille (Tatum; Tatum, Texas) helped Richland College to a 2-0 record last week.  She recorded a double-double in a 3-1 win over Eastfield with 15 kills and 16 digs (a season high).  Later in the week, the outside hitter posted a season high 20 kills in a 3-0 win over Mountain View.  Currently, the sophomore leads her team with 235 total kills, averaging 3.18 per set.  She is also ninth in the nation with a .445 hitting efficiency and 13th in kills.
