GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College President Troy VanAken and Director of Athletics Jack Leipheimer announced on Monday that the College will add varsity men's volleyball in time for the 2010-11 season.

Men's volleyball will become Thiel's 19th varsity athletics program, joining over 50 D-III schools nation-wide which sponsor the sport.  Having surpassed the threshold of 50 programs, nationally, the NCAA is designing a new national championship tournament that could be instituted within a couple of years.

"I am excited to announce the addition of men's volleyball to our athletics program at Thiel College," said VanAken.  "This new program not only represents an outstanding opportunity to satisfy a demand that exists in our area, but also the type of positive growth we are striving for as an institution."

Thiel women's volleyball head coach Steve Brewer will take the reins of the new program in addition to his current responsibilities.  In his four seasons at the helm of the women's program, Brewer quickly built a legitimate contender out of the eight-win team he inherited in 2006.

The women recently wrapped up their best season in over 20 years with a 23-11 record and an appearance in the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship match.

"We are fortunate that Steve Brewer has agreed to lead our men's volleyball program," said Leipheimer.  "As he has shown with the women's team, he has the ability to build a winning program both on and off the court and we look forward to replicating that success within our new men's team."

"With only about 50 other Division III programs in the country, I feel that Thiel has a unique opportunity to become competitive on high level immediately," said Brewer.  "I'd like to thank Dr. VanAken, Jack Leipheimer and the College leadership for indentifying men's volleyball as great way to reach and attract more quality student-athletes to Thiel College."

Individuals interested in joining the Thiel College Men's Volleyball program should contact Steve Brewer at or at 724-589-2078.
