I. AVCA Board Report
Becky gave an update from the AVCA Board of Directors meeting that was held on December 15. She noted that the AVCA had reached two milestones in December. The first was the association has reached 5,000 members for the first time and the second achievement was the AVCA Convention is the largest in the history of the association with over 2,000 attendees in Tampa. Becky mentioned that membership among DIII coaches is doing very well. In December there were 361 DIII coaches who were members of the association which is about 84% of all DIII coaches.
Becky announced that the board voted to increase membership dues by $10 for head coaches and $5 for assistant coaches. Dues for the other divisions were increased as well. The board felt with the increased member benefits and the award programs that have been added the membership dues increase was justified.
A subcommittee has been formed from the Board of Directors to study the possibility of creating a program wide membership within the AVCA membership category structure. Becky is on this subcommittee and will give a voice for DIII. The subcommittee will consider some type of trial membership or a discounted membership during the first year as an incentive for schools to try the program wide membership.
Becky announced that Rob Patrick from the University of Tennessee was voted AVCA President Elect and Ray Bechard from the University of Kansas is the 2010 AVCA President.
II. AVCA Update
During the October conference call some committee members remarked that the salary survey didn't include some questions that would provide helpful information to coaches. Jason asked for volunteers from the committee to provide feedback on the salary survey so the questions included could best reflect the information coaches wanted to know. Sam Lambert, Mark Massey and Jen Bowman agreed to provide feedback on the survey. These comments will be adopted into the 2010 salary survey.
The AVCA Spring Conference will be held May 6 - 8, 2010 in Palo Alto, California in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Championships. Details will be available on the AVCA Web site in February.
Jason reviewed the convention schedule and noted some of the highlighted events that coaches will want to attend.
III. Old Business
Becky reported that among DIII schools who contacted her over $68,000 was raised from the Dig Pink initiative. Several coaches on the committee discussed ideas they used to raise money. It was noted that getting local high schools involved is key. In one community, local high schools raised money for the cause and the school that raised the most received a pizza party. The committee discussed the possibility of schools choosing their own charity to support going forward rather than donating all money to Dig Pink. The consensus was that coaches do support the idea of each school donating money to a charity of their choice.
Becky requested that if she sends an e-mail asking for a response that the committee please reply to that e-mail and not start a new e-mail to include the response. Starting a new e-mail causes problems with her organizational system.
Tammy Swearingen asked the committee to be a voice for DIII in regard to rules. The rules committee receives a lot of criticism but coaches do not take time to submit a proposal to change anything. A proposal must be submitted and go through the process in order to make any changes. Tammy encouraged the coaches to make their voice heard and get proposals in to the committee. Greg and Jen mentioned they submitted proposals and received no feedback from the rules committee. They asked that the rules committee give feedback to everyone who submits a proposal so a determination can be made on whether to resubmit if it doesn't go through. In addition, Tammy encouraged coaches to submit a proposal even if they know another proposal has already been submitted requesting the same rules change. She thought the more the better and the committee would look more favorably on multiple proposals for the same change.
Becky encouraged the committee to communicate with their athletic directors on legislative issues. Lisa Gallagher will be attending the NCAA Convention in January and will report back to the committee on the February conference call with details.
IV. New Business
The AVCA Web site was discussed and some concerns were raised about the overall functionality of the site including finding items that seem hidden and multiple clicks being required to reach certain popular sections of the site. It was suggested that a webinar might be useful on how to navigate the AVCA Web site. Coaches were asked to spend 20 minutes looking at the AVCA site and report back on the functionality during the February call. The AVCA is looking at options to make the site more user friendly.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:35 a.m. ET. The next Division III Head Coaches Committee meeting will be held via conference call at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, February 11.
