AVCA Men's Head Coaches Committee Conference Call Notes
February 11 & 17, 2004 - 1 p.m. ET
Present: Joe Wortmann (chair), Doug Beal, Sean Byron, Jay Hosack, John Hutton, Ron Larsen, Charlie Sullivan,
Joel Walton, Joe Sagula (AVCA President), Jenifer Scheibler (AVCA staff).
I. Men's Coaches Meeting Schedule.
A. A meeting open to all AVCA coaches in attendance at the 2004 NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship in Honolulu will be held. Time, Date and Site TBD.II. Division III Report.
B. A meeting open to all AVCA coaches in attendance at the 2004 Boys' Junior Olympic Championships in Austin, Texas, will be held on July 3 at 6 p.m. in the coaches scout room.
A. Status of NCAA Championship Proposal: The committee reviewed policy regarding submitting a proposal to establish an NCAA championship for Division III men's volleyball.III. Legislative Report.
18.2.4 Championships Established during 1994-95 or Later: A National Collegiate Championship or a division championship may be established during the 1994-95 academic year or thereafter if at least 50 institutions sponsor the sport. (Adopted: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94)
188.8.131.52.1 Minimum Period: In men's sports, the applicable minimum sponsorship number must exist for two consecutive academic years in order for a championship to be established. Legislation to establish the championship may be proposed during the second year in which the minimum sponsorship number exists. In women's sports, the applicable minimum sponsorship number must exist for one academic year in order for a championship to be established. Legislation to establish the championship may be proposed during the year in which the minimum sponsorship number exists. Varsity sports sponsored before August 1, 1994, shall count toward the applicable minimum-year sponsorship requirement. (Adopted: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, Revised: 1/11/00 effective 8/1/00)
184.108.40.206.2 National Collegiate and Division Championship in Same Sport: If a National Collegiate Championship and a division championship exist in the same sport, sponsorship of the sport in the division in which the division championship is conducted shall not count toward the minimum sponsorship number for the National Collegiate Championship. (Adopted: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94)
B. Awards Program: Jenifer indicated that a separate awards program for Division III would be implemented if the head coach membership for that group reached the required 75% by March 1, 2004.
A. Joe Sagula provided a report on the details and status of proposed legislation that would affect men's volleyball.IV. Miscellaneous.
B. It was verified by AVCA Legislative Board Rep, Sarah Weir, that all newly adopted legislation relevant to Division III must be followed by Division III men's volleyball programs even though they are eligible for a non-Division III only championship - a National Collegiate championship.
C. Jenifer reminded the committee that Joel Walton was the Men's Committee rep to the AVCA Legislative Committee and that all information pertinent to AVCA members can be found in the "Legislative News" section of the web site.
A. The details for broadcast of the National Championship in Honolulu on May 6 & 8 are as follows:

Semifinal #1: 11:59 PM ESPN2 Live 6 PM local (6 hr difference between ET and HT)
Semifinal #2: 30 min later ESPN2 Delay 5/7 - 2 PM
Final: 10:00 PM ESPN2 Live 4 PM local (6 hr difference between ET and HT)
B. Youth Education Through Sports (YES) Clinic: The committee reiterated concern that a YES Clinic was not being held at the 2004 Championship. Jenifer said she would follow-up with the YES staff to determine how the coaches could show their desire to have a clinic held in conjunction with the championship.
