Florida State plans to add sand volleyball for women
Florida State moved one step closer to adding women's beach volleyball -- also called sand volleyball -- as an intercollegiate sport.
Seeking to stay in compliance with Title IX, the 1972 federal legislation mandating equal opportunities for women student-athletes, the athletic committee at FSU unanimously approved recommending sand volleyball.
Athletic Director Randy Spetman and FSU President Eric Barron must approve the recommendation before it goes into effect.
The NCAA has recognized sand volleyball as its No. 1 emerging sport, and intercollegiate competition is scheduled to get under way in fall 2011. FSU would be among the first group of universities to field a team.
The program will start with three scholarships and increase to six. Team members will be separate from the current women's volleyball program, and the team will require an additional coach.
