I. Welcome (Cody)

Cody began the call by welcoming everyone back from the summer recess and thanked the HCC for taking the time out of their busy schedules to participate in the call. He then gave his report.

II. AVCA Update (Leah)

Leah gave a brief update on things going on at the AVCA. This included:

* The AVCA Spring Conference is scheduled for May 6-8 on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., and is held in conjunction with the 2010 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.  John Dunning, the decorated women's head volleyball coach at Stanford, headlines the impressive list of presenters, along with U.S. Men's National Team head coach Alan Knipe, and Sue Woodstra, whose Olympic medalist performances span three decades.

Early-Bird Rate (Feb. 8 - April 2): $225 (member & non-member)
Standard Rate (April 2 - May 8): $275 (member & non-member)

* If you are interested in being a speaker at the 2010 AVCA Convention in Kansas City, information is now available on the AVCA Web site, including speaker requirements and a proposal form that should be submitted with presentation suggestions. Please submit the speaker application form and other requested materials to AVCA headquarters by April 9, 2010. Members of the AVCA Education and Publications Committee will review all applications and convention speakers will be selected and notified no later than July 15, 2010.

*In an effort to engage collegiate assistants and grow AVCA membership within this group, the AVCA is offering a limited-time 2-for-1 collegiate assistant coach membership offer! This membership campaign isdesigned to provide volleyball programs with an affordable option to allow more of your coaches to receive the benefits of an AVCA membership at a lower cost to your institution.

How Does It Work? Renew or sign up one of your assistant coaches for AVCA membership between now and July 1, 2010 and you will receive a complimentary one-year AVCA membership for one additional assistant on your coaching staff!

*Please Note - At the end of each assistant's one-year AVCA membership both coaches will receive an invoice for renewal.

*Restrictions - In order for this offer to be used toward renewing or signing up graduate

assistants, the graduate assistant must be the complimentary membership, or both coaches must be graduate assistants.

III. Chair Reports (Cody)

"Life in the Balance Issues" and Survey:

The HCC has received the results of the "Life in the Balance" survey that the HCC sub-committee created. There were 166 total survey responses. Some regions and conferences did not have as many respondants has others, however the HCC feels like some very significant and important data was collected.

  • Cody: Gathered from the survey results that it doesn't make sense to eliminate competition dates.
  • Kathy: 87% of the survey respondants are spending under $500 in the spring. 33% are raising the money for spring play.
  • Cody: Thinks SAAC is on our side
  • Cody: Posed this question concerning the 8 hour rule to the HCC: Should we increase the limit of what are "volleyball" hours?
  • Tom: Student-athletes sign a year-long contract, in theory, not a one-semester contract. You can't work at McDonald's for 8 hours a week and expect that to pay for your tuition.
  • Ibraheem: If they limit hours, they might end up scaling down scholarships down the road. We need to poll the student-athletes, not just the caoches. The students don't want less.
  • Tom: High school athletes are practicing and competing more than collegiate athletes. They go straight from high school season to club season and play almost year-around.
  • Lynze & Cody: Keep the 8 hours, but break down the time allotments differently, in a way to get more volleyball "gym" time.
  • Kathy: Be proactive within your individual institutions. If the NCAA Management Council doesn't sponsor legislation, it would need to be sponsored by at least two leagues.
  • Lynze: Will get the Sunshine State Conference to put a proposal together.
  • Bren: The sponsored legislation would need to go to the Championships and Legislative committees, as well.
  • Cody: Moving on to exemptions...not a lot of us use more than one exemption
  • Carlos: Finds it interesting that team GPA's are higher in the spring than fall
  • Tom: Particularly with incoming athletes, they generally have a lower GPA in the fall than the spring. The data can be misleading sometimes.
  • Kathy: Glanced at the percentage of teams who had over a 3.0 GPA; there is no data to say the GPA's were significantly worse in the fall than in the spring.
  • Phil: Has the NCAA ever said what they really think is out of balance with volleyball?
  • Cody: Not sure if they will ever specifically tell us.
  • Kathy: What's out of balance is the budget.
  • Bren: Agrees with Kathy

IV. Next Meeting
