Division I Head Coaches Committee Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, October 6, 2010
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (EST)
Call led by Mark Rosen, Division I Representative, University of Michigan
1. NCAA Legislation Action Items (Kathy DeBoer)
Kathy told the committee the NCAA Legislative Council will meet October 18th and 19th. The council will not be voting during this meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the issues currently under consideration. TJ and Kathy prepared talking points on the two issues that potentially will have the most significant impact on women's volleyball. Kathy reviewed the talking points with the committee.
- Proposal 2010-96: Reduce from 29 to 21 the number of units used to determine the start of preseason practice. Cost savings estimated to be $3,920 per institution. Kathy noted this is only a women's volleyball issue and was easy to take away unless coaches speak up and contact their conference legislative representatives.
- Proposal 2010-88: An institution is limited to two dates of competition during the non-championship segment, of which only one date may be an away-from-home date of competition. This proposal would apply to sports across the board and Kathy felt sports like soccer, softball and women's lacrosse will also lobby against this proposal.
Kathy emphasized the importance of coaches contacting their conference legislative representatives in order to provide feedback on these proposals. The proposals are likely to pass unless coaches get involved. She told the committee her hope was to have several conference legislative representatives speak up at the October meeting to share the feedback they have received from coaches. The legislative council roster and talking points were distributed to the committee prior to the call.
2. Recruiting Task Force Update (Erin Appleman)
The RTF had a call on October 5 with the primary topic of discussion the transfer rule. Erin and the task force members receive more e-mails and questions on the transfer rule than any other issue. The RTF conducted a survey on the transfer rule about 18 months ago but didn't get a very good response rate. The plan is to send another survey this October to get a better understanding of how coaches feel about the transfer rule. The survey will be one question and take less than one minute to complete. All head coaches are encouraged to participate in this survey.
The RTF also discussed the proposals currently being considered by the NCAA Legislative Council. The goal was to determine how the task force feels about each proposal and next steps. No action was taken during the call.
3. Budget and Support Survey (Mark Rosen)
A coach has contacted Mark about the possibility of the AVCA conducting a survey of Division I coaches that would provide data on scholarship, travel, recruiting, equipment and marketing support received by volleyball programs. The committee discussed the timing of the survey and when would work best for distribution to get the highest response rate while also providing coaches with the results early enough to have an impact on budgeting decisions for next year. The decision was made to conduct the survey as soon as possible with the goal of getting the results to coaches by the end of the season.
4. AVCA & Convention Update (Jason Jones)
Jason encouraged coaches to register for the convention if they have not already done so. He noted the early registration discount deadline is Nov. 5 and coaches can save $100 off their registration fee by registering prior to that date. Convention hotels are over 60% full at this point and he noted reservations typically pick-up the last two weeks of October. Coaches are encouraged to make hotel reservations soon if they are planning to stay in the discounted convention hotel room blocks. The AVCA has developed a convention site that provides information on registration packages, convention hotels, a schedule of activities and many other convention details. Click here to access the convention site. Jason noted that the first DI Head Coaches Committee Meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15 prior to the Division I conference meetings. In the past this meeting has been held on Thursday morning.
The Division I Salary Survey closed on October 4. The response rate was 73% compared to 72% who participated last year. Survey results will be sent to the coaches who participated in the survey in late October or early November.
Jason asked coaches to please submit entries for the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week. The Play of the Week site is getting 10,000 hits each week which is 10,000 exposures for the volleyball programs that are submitting nominations. Click here for details on how to submit a video for Play of the Week consideration.
The AVCA needs the help of Division I coaches for Under Armour High School All-American nominations. Those college coaches who have a recruit that is a potential All-American are asked to please remind that recruit's high school coach they must be an AVCA member in order for that player to be considered for All-American status. The AVCA does not want to leave any top players out of the program because their high school coach is not a member.
Jamie Gordon encouraged coaches to help support the Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship Program. The program will provide eight (8) college students who are active AVCA members the opportunity to attend the AVCA Convention in Kansas City. The scholarship covers convention registration fees and hotel costs for the scholarship recipients. Any donations for the program are appreciated as the goal is to have funding in place to provide more scholarships next year. Click here for instructions on how to make a donation.
5. Reminder to renew memberships by October 15 to be eligible to nominate student-athletes for post season awards
Division I head coaches must have their AVCA membership active by October 15 and remain active through the remainder of the season in order for their student-athletes and the coach to be eligible for AVCA award programs.
