With nearly 11,000 votes cast in its fifth week of the 2010 season, the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week has been awarded to the University of North Carolina volleyball team. The Tar Heels earned the honor after beating the other four semifinalists -Bluffton University, George Mason University, Marquette University and Vernon College - during a week-long voting period.

The award-winning play came during UNC's home match against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rival Florida State University on September 30. The 41-second play is highlighted by the Tar Heels' unstoppable defensive effort to overcome the Seminoles. The rally began with a strong block from FSU that the Tar Heels were quick to recover and send right back over the net with a sprawling save from junior libero  Kaylie Gibson. The Seminoles sent the ball back with a strong right line drive that was dug up by UNC's senior outside hitter, Suzanne Haydel, who attacked the ball back over to FSU. After a couple jousts at the net and an amazing dig from Gibson, the Tar Heels were able to set up senior middle blocker Christine Vaughen, who won the play with an aggressive quick attack. UNC went on to win the match in five sets, giving the Seminoles their first ACC loss of the season and ending their 19-match ACC win streak.

The play, which can be viewed on the AVCA's YouTube channel by clicking here, will now join the other weeks' finalists in becoming eligible for the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Year, to be announced at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet on Friday, Dec. 17, at the AVCA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
